GENESEE CHARTER TOWNSHIP Open Burning Instructions and Provision Summary The burning permit you will be issued is good for six (6) months commencing on the date of issue. Any day that you intend to have an open fire, during the six (6) month period, you must call 810 640 1720 and leave a message giving your address and the date you are intending to have an open fire. A response by the fire department to an open bring complaint, where the open fire is found to be in violation of the Open Burning Ordinance, will result in the assessment of costs to the homeowner in the amount of $500.00, under the Genesee Township Fire Cost Recovery Ordinance #493 and the revocation of the burning permit. It is your responsibility to retain your copy of this permit as long as it is in effect and present it to the fire department or police department upon request. When having an open fire you must comply with Genesee Charter Township Open Burning Ordinance #410 which includes: All open fires must be attended at all times by a person at least 18 years of age. All open fires may not be started before sunrise and must be completely extinguished by sunset. The only material that may be burned is brush and stumps. Leaves, building materials, tires, and other rubbish may not be burned. All open fires must be at least 50 feet from any structure. Flammable liquids may not be used to ignite open fires. Open fires are not permitted in the public right-of-way within the township. If an open fire creates an objectionable condition, the fire department may require the open fire be extinguished. Burning permits are issued at the Township Office from 9:00am-5:00pm Monday through Friday on-line at www.geneseetwp.com. If you need a permit and are unable to come and pickup one or obtain one on-line, call the Township Office at 810 640 2000 or the Fire Department at 810 640 1720 and leave your name and telephone number and the fire department will make arrangements to get you a permit. If you wish to obtain a complete copy of this ordinance, you may contact the Township Office during regular business hours. Rules of Thumb * If you rake it up off the yard, don't burn it * Keep the pile you are burning to a size that will be fully consumed between the time it is lit and sunset * Don't burn when the wind direction will carry the smoke toward your neighbor's home.
